Days are long, but the years are short. This is what people say about parenting. With 2 young kids, my sleep is often too short and too interrupted. Blurry eyed, I often fall asleep BEFORE my children when putting them down for a nap. Days like this makes the days feel even longer. REALLY long. It’s 24/7, no catching up on sleep on the weekend, no calling in when I’m sick. It can be hard to remember things I should be grateful for. But this curated list of videos from TED are some great reminders on what we should be grateful for, like being alive one more day or the hardships I’ve endured in the past because without those experiences I would not be who I am today. Watch these as we approach day of giving thanks.

Nature’s beauty can be fleeting -- but not through Louie Schwartzberg’s lens. His stunning time-lapse photography, accompanied by powerful words from Benedictine monk Brother David Steindl-Rast, serves as a meditation on being grateful for every day.

Martin Seligman talks about psychology -- as a field of study and as it works one-on-one with each patient and each practitioner. As it moves beyond a focus on disease, what can modern psychology help us to become?

The one thing all humans have in common is that each of us wants to be happy, says Brother David Steindl-Rast, a monk and interfaith scholar. And happiness, he suggests, is born from gratitude. An inspiring lesson in slowing down, looking where you're going, and above all, being grateful.

In her New Orleans neighborhood, artist and TED Fellow Candy Chang turned an abandoned house into a giant chalkboard asking a fill-in-the-blank question: "Before I die I want to ___." Her neighbors' answers -- surprising, poignant, funny -- became an unexpected mirror for the community. (What's your answer?)

As a young child, Tania Luna left her home in post-Chernobyl Ukraine to take asylum in the US. And one day, on the floor of the New York homeless shelter where she and her family lived, she found a penny. She has never again felt so rich. A meditation on the bittersweet joys of childhood -- and how to hold them in mind.

Writer Andrew Solomon has spent his career telling stories of the hardships of others. Now he turns inward, bringing us into a childhood of adversity, while also spinning tales of the courageous people he's met in the years since. In a moving, heartfelt and at times downright funny talk, Solomon gives a powerful call to action to forge meaning from our biggest struggles.

In this deceptively simple 3-minute talk, Dr. Laura Trice muses on the power of the magic words "thank you" -- to deepen a friendship, to repair a bond, to make sure another person knows what they mean to you. Try it.

What Is Gratitude Day?

According to HolidayInsights.comWorld Gratitude Day was started in 1965 at the International East-West Center in Hawaii during a Thanksgiving Dinner. At the dinner, attendees pledged to hold a Gratitude Gathering the following September 21st in their home countries.”

Why Is Gratitude Important?

Practicing gratitude is linked to a wide variety of benefits – everything from increasing positive emotions (such as optimism, joy, and happiness), increasing physical and emotional resilience (strengthening immunity, being able to tolerate pain better, improving self-esteem), improving relationships (feeling more connected to others, being compassionate and kind), and even increasing productivity (increase in creativity, lowering stress, promoting feelings of camaraderie). It’s even linked to reduced feelings of anxiety and depression as well as feeling more connected to their community. Is there anything this magic potion can’t do? Here are some ideas on how to participate in cultivating a grateful living.

Ways To Practice Gratitude

  1. Love yourself
Be thankful about something about yourself. It could be a physical trait, a circumstance, or a personality trait. Think of all the wonderful ways this trait or circumstance has brought happiness to your life. I know that I am always figuring out how to be a better mom, wife, daughter, friend, and citizen of this world. Just today, say to yourself  “I am enough”.
  2. Thank friends & family
Think about someone who has influenced you – someone who made you a better person. Could be a mentor at work, a parent who taught you about perseverance, a friend that was there for you during a rough time, or a teacher that believed in you and guided you through college. Contact them and let them know how much they mean to you.
  3. Be kind to strangers
We can all use more kindness and generosity in our lives. Buy coffee for the the person behind you in line, or say “good morning!” to everyone you pass by on your walk, or give a dollar to the next beggar you come across.
  4. Be an active part of your community
There are many things you can do for your community. You can volunteer, pick up trash while you go for a walk, donate money or books to your local library.
  5. Appreciate what you have
Everyone always wants more in life. It’s a human trait to want to strive for more. Take a moment and think of all the wonderful things you already have, right now – quiet evening, healthy children, delicious meal, and thoughtful friends.

1. During a meal, have each person share what his/her high points and low points were that day. See if your child noticed other kids being especially nice or not nice that day.

2. Thank each other for small things during dinner. If your dinners are anything like mine, I’m forgetting ketchup for the fries or my daughter needs a refill of milk. So it’s a gold mine for saying thank you. In Japanese culture, we say a quick thanks before we eat and somehow my daughter has picked up on that. So she often starts the dinner with “thank you, papa for this delicious dinner” ahhh warms my heart <3

3. Don’t make Christmas and birthdays too much about gifts. Put more emphasis on experiences and tradition such as pancake breakfast, a “yes day”, special outing to the zoo, meal with friends, decorating the house with balloons and streamers. The more toys children have, the less they appreciate each of those things.

4. Take the time to discuss the things we have in our lives that others may not have. Some kids have special toys that your family may not have. Your family may have things that others can’t afford.

5. Have your kids donate toys, give meals and supplies to the homeless. Starting at a young age, clear out some toys to give away. This is especially useful in December before Santa comes. You can also utilize local Buy Nothing groups or even have a garage sale.

6. Last but not least, model the behavior that you want to see in your child. As parents we must declutter our own closets, say thank you to others for their kindness, and express appreciation for what we have instead of constantly buying new things. If we can’t show them how to live a grateful life, how can we expect them to do it on their own too?

Gratitude tokens are a great tool for bring more positivity into your life. There is a lot of research connecting gratitude with happiness, optimism, and even a boost in immunity.

Here are some ways you can use your gratitude tokens.

  1. Give them to a friend or stranger who made your day more special. Did the barista make your coffee EXACTLY the way you like it? Was the server nice even though in hindsight you were a little rude (because you were hangry and having a bad day)? Thank them and give them a token. And don’t forget their tip!
  2. Improve morale and productivity at work by recognizing team players. When I worked in an office everyone was quick to point out what you can do better. But I rarely heard people mention the things that were going well. It really should be the opposite. Thank people for good attitude, going above and beyond, being a team player, or simply being pleasant and fun to work with.
  3. Teach gratitude by giving your children coins to hand out to others. Hand several tokens to your child and go out for errands. Look for opportunities to say thank you to someone. Point out the nice things people do and see if your child volunteers to give it away. You may learn something about your child.
  4. Use in a kindness activity with your students, scout troops, or club. With more and more stories of school bullying and shooting, let’s remember to be kind to one another. If you’re a teacher, perhaps pass them out as a class assignment. How did the student feel about receiving a token? How did they feel about giving one away? Was it hard to give it away? Would they do it again?
  5. Thank members in your volunteer or social groups. Use them with Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Meetup groups, knitting groups, mom groups, and more! Hand out a token at the beginning of each meeting to call out a member and something special they did.
  6. Pass them out at Thanksgiving for those who have done kind deeds. This Thanksgiving, consider handing out a token to each family member at your next meal as you mention something kind that they did recently.
  7. Give a token to someone who has helped you in the past. Write a letter and give it to that person along with the token. Never too late to say thank you.
  8. Let it be a reminder to look for things to be grateful about. Keep it in your wallet, purse, your nightstand, or any place where you will see it often. Did someone open the door for you at the store? Did someone pick up something off the floor for you? Take a moment every night to think of a few things you are most grateful for that day.

Just like a muscle, the more frequently you exercise these gratitude muscles, you’ll start to become more easily aware of just how much goodness you are surrounded by.

What are other ways you’ve used your Gratitude Token?
